The Red Snapper Sdn Bhd, Perak State Economic Development corporation's flagship telecommunications and animation initiative has entered into a 70 : 30 joint venture with India based Rocking Pixels to build a studio named Rocking Pixels Malaysia (MSC) Sdn.Bhd in Perak, Malaysia.

Talking to Animation Xpress Asia Pacific, Asad Sultan, Director, The Red Snapper shared, "With a combined investment of almost US$15 million, the studio will have cutting-edge technology and infrastructure that will ensure that Malaysia becomes a preferred destination for the production of 3D animation for film, tv and gaming for international markets. The facility will provide end-to-end capabilities for content creation. We will start by providing services into Hollywood and other film and high-end TV projects, and then co-production and production opportunities. We ultimately aim to develop IP, content, and characters in-house."

The studio setup will be initiated in the first week of March and will be fully operational by December 2010.The overall studio capacity will be 300+ members.

Talking about the main objective of The Red Snapper for setting up a studio, Asad Sultan shared, "Red snapper is a state linked technology company in which the Malaysian government holds a minority stake. The state of Perak, where the company has telecom operations, is launching a state-of-the-art creative content centre within the technology park located in Ipoh, in which Red Snapper is an anchor tenant and within which its studio facilities are based. Our partnership with the state, and access to the studio facilities, acted as catalysts for Red snapper to set up the animation studio."

Sanjit Daniel, CEO, Rocking Pixels shared, "With the gap between graphics and reality rapidly closing, the computational requirements to produce realistic 3d movies is growing at an astronomical pace. We are excited about the future computing platforms based on the upcoming Nvidia Fermi architecture, and how together we will dramatically improve our ability to produce photorealistic 3d graphics."

Excited about the new venture, Mohit Patel, Executive Director, Rocking Pixels shared, "Recent Hollywood movies like Avatar and District 9 have clearly shown that they are technology driven. We have developed proprietary technology in areas such as motion capture and high=end rendering to deliver 3D animation of comparable quality. Our positioning in Malaysia also allows us to be very competitive in terms of costs without compromising on quality. With the Malaysian government support to make Malaysia an animation hub we believe this partnership will enable Rocking Pixels to have access to world class infrastructure. The combination of all these factors will enable the studio to deliver Hollywood class 3D feature film animation.

Rocking pixels has been operational in India for 3 years and has been primarily an R&D company focusing on research into 3D Real time rendering, Raytracing and motion capture.
